V. 2. / 156.) I Found It

I found it through the branches
The boughs of a spreading tree
Through the spaces where it wasn’t
Lined bright shades of living sky

I found it through the kittens
Curled in their basket by the fire
In no spaces where they weren’t
A lighted softness a shining filling

I found it through the breakers
As they tumbled on the shore
Through the waiting wave delight
In the see-through light between

I found it through the lilies
That lined the roadside drains
In all the colours they accepted
In white --- the one rejected

I found it through the colours
That with our eyes we never see
I found it through the spaces
Where beauty really wasn’t

Being back-to-front is easy
But, oh so hardly is it found!
The brightest wings of all
Lie behind the swiftest light
