A Ladder of LIGHT . . . Jacob's ladder . . .

LIGHT

THE DEGREE OF LIGHT within us is in accordance with our degree of openness to the light and how much of ourselves we are willing to lose to allow it access into our innermost being, to fill us with life there, where there is space; for light is life, and life is light. And our different levels of light and life are as the steps on a ladder. . .

And there is the letting go to receive the next; ‘but each step up is dark by comparison with the one above it from which it receives its light.’

                                                   *

There is an invisible ‘ladder’ of light
Joining heaven and earth within us:
Letting go......we are stepping up
Clinging on...we are stepping down
Decreasing....we ascend
Increasing.....we descend

       *

‘See how many hidden causes there are . . . hidden from the comprehension of human beings . . . There are lights upon lights, one more clear than another, each one dark by comparison with the one above it from which it receives its light. As for the Supreme Cause, all lights are dark in its presence.’

And this is part of our trouble: we won’t let go the one for the other, which is above it: for we won’t let go of what we have, for what we haven’t: because it is yet as darkness to us, as we haven’t got it, and so, we reject it: we turn back, step down, and travel earthwards, instead of heavenwards.

The truth offends, that’s why we have so little of it.

                                                 *

‘But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.’

- Ephesians 5: 13 / ( reproved: exposed)

Wherever light can enter---it makes light---there---where my darkness was---and my darkness is light.

If then I take the light I am given by the light and make it my own, there I hinder my own self: for wheresoever it is mine it is not his and I am a thief. And I stop travelling up the ladder of revelation, and get stuck.

---There is the constant tipping out to be filled. 'He must increase, but I decrease.'

When I begin to understand that my light is not my own but light’s, (his/him) then I can receive more light: more of him who is light; and in his light see light and know that I am nothing. And this is all my joy.

The egg is the world
Whoever wants to be born
Must first destroy a world---
The bird is flying to God‘

Poetry Diary: Part 4.) Pushing the limits and going deeper . . .

(New Poems below...)

POETRY DIARY: PART FOUR:
Going Further

HOW EASILY AND UNCONSCIOUSLY creative expression becomes enmeshed in conventional practice and current trends put up walls. But all around us are living pictures of ourselves, which can give insight into that crippling universal reality and set us free. As it is in the world of nature, so is it in all things: -
The living ‘flowers,’ of a single ‘plant,’ come to ‘bloom’ for awhile then die for new ones to flourish. In their continually necessary, temporal cycle of life and death continuous renewal, and the way of LIFE for all things! But, we are not so wise as the flowers!! We hang on to ‘the stem,’ refuse to fall, and miss out on what’s next. But not so the flowers! They know, this is the way of things, and fall happily; and therefore, they continue flowering! And, Solomon, we are told, ‘in all his glory,’ was not so wonderfully or wisely arrayed as one of these!
In no way aspiring to be instrumental here, perhaps, it might be true, that without pushing the limits, without crazy-seeming innovation and experiment, people and literature, and all forms of art, would stagnate ~ and without knowing it ~ because you can’t know something, without something to know it by. If you cannot recognize it, how can you tell whether you are doing it, or not? Stagnating, or not? So, maybe, we ought not to resent or resist those things which we cannot yet understand ~ even though fearing The Unknown is a natural human instinct ~ but rather brave that intangible place, plunge into its dark, and delight in it: and increase within, the wherewithal to know it by! Else, what will we gain from sticking to our pride’s right to comprehend everything before we approve of it? We will gain only diminishing pools of reluctant water and perpetually paralyze our powers of perception. But anyone who has once learned to surrender their impressions finds a new world forming there, where they let go, and an eager surge of lively water, rising in a new awakening!

THE RAGGED WRITINGS OF EVERLAND: VOLUME THREE:  ARKIAHH DREAMING:  (Vol. 3 / 9.(b.); 10; 11.(a.); 11.(b.); 11.(c.); 25.)

9. (b.) Born of the Spirit

YOU HAD NOT to wait too long
Or worry it would not come
The inspiration that gave you
The illusive words you looked for
Within the secret world you lived in

As the branch cannot help but wave in the wind
Unresisting you moved . . .
In not thinking you knew you received

As the wind blows and you know not
Where it comes from or where it is going
So is everyone who is born of the Spirit
Bound as one with the Wind
Tied as two in the Branch

Creating the living thing
Was in you as unconscious as breathing
You did not even know when you had begun
Or when, or where you had finished!

10. Created Out of Nothing

WHAT WAS created out of nothing---
Was full of everything

What was created out of love
Contained all that was needed---
Love was everything

Love, taking everything away, but itself
Was a Book of Answers in riddles
Giving all of itself---to find them out

                                     *

11. (a.) The Land Ends, the Water Falls

WHERE THE LAND ends---the water falls
All my earthly effort gone---my spirit upward soars:
The fall---and rising again

The needed thing---its lack attracts:
All my asking done---the thing is given

Never one without the other
Where life fell true---and so---rose again

11. (b.)  Kaleidoscope Wrestling

This love which wrestles in my pool of lights:
Time in a kaleidoscope of coloured glass
This wheel which turns my light to puzzling dark
A patterned picture forms from lighted brokenness
New life shining out of former darkened order
From shattered fragments bent by light in truth

One turn---one flickering light---one moment there
And all my pain---turned over
Making crazy sense

Love’s inner wrestling wheel---life turns
And all my parts of knowing spin---a whole
One patterned way of seeing---passing over
For another---and over and over---

And I dance inside---
As coloured glass in liquid form
Goes pouring through my veins as burning oil

It takes all the cracked and shining bits of me
To form the whole---and make of brokenness
The better maker of beauty than any flawless image

The moon descends the nightlight changes
My own light darkens as my sight’s dangerous
The Sun arises daylight broadens---
He---seeing for me as his light brightens
And seeing's---safe---seeing with my eyes shut

11. (c.) Jacob Wrestling

The letting go of one---for the other
And lights falling upon lights
One clearer than another
Yet each dark by comparison
With the one above it
From which it receives its light

But---we won’t let go
The one rung on our ladder
For the other which is above it

We won’t let go of what we have
For what we haven’t:
It is still as darkness to us
Because we haven’t got it
And so, we reject it:
We turn back
Step down
And travel earthwards

The truth offends
That’s why we have so little of it

All our knowledge
Is as darkness to him who is light
All that I can ever know
Is as darkness
In comparison with his incomparable light---

We have it for a moment and it’s gone

25.  To Keep Going

TO KEEP GOING and not give up
To take the flack and not fling it back:
The stuff of jaded jewels in velvet
And the pricelessness of patience
In being wise as serpents
Harmless as doves

Angels on the Ladder of Heaven . . .

I imagined that when I should turn a page, or walk the next step in an ordinary day that I would come across something that would make it less ordinary and me more alive and awake to whatever was in the air . . .

I didn’t want much; just a glimpse of what was there that I couldn’t see with my normal eyes. It was always being offered: I knew there was always more: I had already found a host of lighted things. I think I was always looking . . .

One thing led to another, and that would lead me on to find the next thing. And on this beautiful day as I was walking along the path past the house I turned the corner and there before me was a ladder . . .

And it was in my way. I looked at it. Suddenly I knew the ladder was in my inner way within me; and I stopped and listened. And I saw heaven open, and the angels of God which are always with us ascending and descending upon the ladder of heaven as we increase or decrease in the light . . .

Joy in the light increased by degrees as I decreased . . .

Degrees of climbing down the Ladder of Knowing: losing more and more of my own tight-held opinions as I descended . . .

The less I had of my own, the more I had of his: there being more space in me the more I descended and decreased . . .

The rungs of the Ladder stepping down were decreasing barriers to my knowing more and increasing lifts to stepping up within the light . . .

The more I descended dying to myself, the more his light could enter my heart and ascend the stairway of heaven . . .

It was shown me, also, that the angels moving up and down the stairway were the thoughts and intents of my heart;  or that they were the bearers and carriers of the thoughts and intents of my heart . . . in the light . . . that glorious beam of light that was the stairway and relationship with God who IS LOVE . . . it was the way of Life!

Jacob's Ladder and the Dead Tree

I went walking in the twilight
Where all was full and free
Where half the light was edged in sun
The other half in moon

The tide was flowing in and out
And on it, brought a tree
Stark naked dead and bare, floating
Its branches stuck up in the air

Wherever I turned to look
There a small dead tree
I saw dead trees – everywhere
And all along the harbour path

Four times I saw the barren thing
Beside the water’s edge
And four times I deeply wondered
What had become of me?

So strange to see a similar thing
Wherever I chanced to look
But I knew the heart of Love
Was speaking in me

Of all ascending and descending:
My spirit’s ‘spinal cord’
Jacob’s ladder there
As my own thoughts step up and down

My way first easy then is hard
But once I am perplexed
Then all easy once again
For where I didn’t know, I knew

Ever my own deceiver
My first name is in easy ways
Not liking hard I fall and rise
According to what I will of me, give up

Only my understanding taken
Can be brought to me anew
At the point I am split in twain:
Two-edged renewed

QUOD PETIS HIC EST:
What you seek is hard
That for which I ask:
The hardest thing of all!

To go against my lust for knowing
To set myself at nought
And to stay there
All in joy!

To step back from the easy way
To do nothing but believe
Oh, what I seek is hard
Hard!

To bear the affront
Of having my knowledge
Annulled
And not to be sad!

To have only what I cannot see or touch
That in my dying live!
To gain the prize of life never won of self
What I seek is hard!

QUOD PETIS EST FACILE:
What you seek is easy
That for which I ask
It is the easiest thing of all!

To do nothing
That I might understand what I can’t
To do nothing but float in joy
Where I was nought!

To stand still in the hard way
To only believe it easy
What I seek is easy
Easy!

To delight in the sting
Of finding my knowledge squashed
To be happy in having the reality
Of only the seeming nebulous

To live in my dying
And of love receive a new name
What I seek is
Easy!

THE DEAD TREE SAILS ON . . .
