V. 2. / 137.) Sent, And In Being Sent Chosen Of The Light . . .

Sent --- and in being sent chosen of the light
Held to the brightly shining mirrored shore.
Our hands are sifting through the dry sea wrack
They play in the hard seaweed finding empty shells
Turning over the former homes of our lies
The amaranthine lines of our purple seashells.
We sit and rest, yes, --- or, do we lie down and die?
We neither know, nor care, or understand, or see
For life for us is the same as death
And every hard place the gate of our escape.

V. 2. / 136.) Where The Dark Touches The Light . . .

Where the dark touches the light
Where the blissful beams crumple ---
And where in the diffusion
Of broken sight
The edges of my life are honed ---
There the Beloved dwells
And makes his way through
Carrying me along ---
With him --- in the gifted confusion.

V. 2. / 135.) Cowered And Yellow The Desert Rose . . .

Cowered and yellow the desert rose
That appeared behind the boulder ---
But in rich shadow protected
From the burning sun:

The confusion was working for good:
I did not know where I was:
Sickness was in me, sickness is in me
And everything is hard:
My life hampered on every side
And I am weak, faint, and weary

‘Where am I?’ the small voice softly whispers
Through the parting layers of hopelessness
‘Here, where I am . . . ,’
And the reply, rising, spoke of chrysoprasus
For the tenth foundation was trial and testing
And a chrysoprasus ---
A shining foundation out of darkness.

V. 2. / 134.) The Golden Bubbles . . .

They say that life comes out of death
And new terms out of our battles won
But sunk too completely deep in dread
The heart doesn’t see it for a good long while:
What if your home were swallowed up
In another’s spirit that was not as your own
And every visible corner in it ---
Swamped and stolen from you --- inside ---
Oh, the pain is great where opposing spirits meet!
And the battle is not over when the visitor leaves:
He leaves his brush behind him
Ceaselessly painting himself over every holy surface.
Wherever you look you see it, and you grieve
Grieving deeply that you cannot reach him
Tears are your only solace
He cannot understand or hear you --- he is deaf
And you are, too, if you will not forgive.
But it is all too much, too much, too much ---
More than you can bear --- too much, too much!
Then a fall: a letting go --- and a miracle, plain and true!
But how could you tell anyone --- they would only laugh!
Glistening golden globes of light --- braving --- floating
Buoyant, beautiful --- big bubbles of lovely golden light!
Bouncing gently, here and there --- touching: healing
Meeting: clearing --- cleansing life --- throughout your house!
And in help such as this --- you cling to it! --- And climb out!

V. 2. / 133.) The Broken Floor . . .

Even from the beginning
The floor of the world was damaged ---
From then on they didn’t see it ---
For in the starlight
The broken floor looked smooth.
No one in the ageless night
Saw the treacherous cracks
That could trip one up until
It was too late.
But for those who walked in daylight
The broken floor looked as it was
And it was clear where to walk
But it was also very lonely.
Then they that walked in darkness
Saw a great light and in the clefts
And crevices where they were
Found gold and great comfort there
And they were not alone.

V. 2. / 132.) What Does It Mean . . .

What does it mean that the seasons change
The tides turn and that seeds must die
Before any tree can live...
But the inevitability
That the way of things will change utterly...
And, yet still...
We'll be surprised beyond measure
And wonder what has hit us
We who have not learned from nature
The life-fullness of death

V. 2. / 131.) Time Runs Out . . .

Time runs out...
The waves of love that follow me
Have had their way...
And my patterns of shells once there
Caging and shaping my life...
Are no more...

Black marble pieces... face white...
White alabaster... against black...
The game long set now checkmate
And out stretches the angry...
Loving hand...
And sweeps the whole away.
